Abstract

1,243,790. Wrapping in inflated bags. A. C. FORMO. 11 Nov., 1968, No. 53352/68. Heading B8C. A machine for placing articles in bags uses an air jet to distend the bag initially and a bag spreader which moves into the mouth of the bag and has jaws which fully open the bag mouth for insertion of the article. Bag opening device.-The bags 117, which have a large lower flap adjacent the opening are supplied in a stack mounted on table 120 and held in place by a wicket 125. The table is biased upwards by springs 124 and is supported by a screw jack (not shown). The lower flaps of the bags are supported under the outlet of a low pressure air supply 68 and adjacent this outlet is the end of a high pressure air supply tube 74. A blast of air from tube 74 initially opens the bag, and it is opened further by the low pressure air supply. The bag mouth spreader comprises a pair of jaws 104 mounted on arms 103 pivoted at 101. The whole assembly is mounted on a carriage 92 which is reciprocated into and away from the bag by a piston 98 and cylinder 97. To open the mouth of the bag fully, carriage 92 is advanced so that the jaws 104 are with the bag and the jaws are pivoted upwards by the action of cylinder 105 to engage the upper part of the bag mouth. Article supply.-The articles to be packaged are fed singly to table 60. A chain 48 running over chain wheels 19, 20 carries pushers 50 which engage with the article and push it into the bag and, by continued pressure separate the filled bag from the wicket 125 and deposit it at removal position 182. The presence of the article is detected by lever 142 which operates switch 140 to set the bag opening mechanism in motion. When the article is a sliced loaf as shown, fingers 180 may be provided to prevent the front slices from toppling over.
