Abstract
647,988. Die-rolling. CRUCIBLE STEEL CO. OF AMERICA. Dec. 3, 1945, No. 28006/48. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1945. Divided out of 647,942. [Class 83 (iv)] A roll stand comprises a frame, a pair of rolls journalled in bearing blocks slidably mounted in the frame, means spacing the bearing blocks apart, including a support interposed therebetween. and secured to the frame and the blocks for urging the blocks towards the fixed support and so tensioning the frame in opposite directions from the support. A mill stand comprises side frames 116, 118. Fig. 4, supported on pedestals 120 and rigidly secured together by upper and lower horizontal tie-rods 142, 144. One of the pedestals carries a bearing 124 for the main drive shaft 66 and the side frame 118 carries bearings for a vertical shaft 132 coupled to the main shaft by bevel gears 134, 136 and to horizontal countershafts 162 and 222 by bevel gears 158, 160 and 218, 220 respectively. The side frames are formed with guideways for upper and lower bearing blocks carried by bridge members 212 and 152. These bearing blocks carry the countershafts 222 and 162 and also the upper and lower roll shafts 228 and 168 which are driven from the countershafts by helical gears 224, 226 and 164, 166 respectively. Gears 164 and 224 are axially adjustable on the countershafts in order to adjust the angular relationship between the die rolls. The die rolls 174 and 234 are shown with V-shaped grooves but actually are provided with contured depressions of various shapes and depths depending on the product to be made. The lower bridge member 152 is vertically adjustable by means of two screws 186, 188 rotated from a shaft 198 coupled by bevel gears to a manually operable shaft 204. A single handoperated screw 246 carried by the side frame 116 acts through a breaker block on the upper bridge 212 and a parallel movement of the bridge under the action of the single screw is ensured by a linkage comprising a wide rigid horizontal link 254 pivoted to a shaft 256 anchored between the side frames of the machine and to a rigid substantially vertical link 266 which is in turn pivoted on a horizontal shaft 272 anchored in the bridge member 212. Keys 274 and 276 are bolted within shallow grooves in the frame and extend transverselv across the opposed faces of the guideways, bars 284 and 286 are rigidly secured to the bearing blocks 148, 150 and wedge blocks 280 and 282 are movable between the keys and bars by means of hexagonal rods 288 and 290 each having left-hand and right-hand screw threads at its opposite ends. The frame may thus be prestressed by adjusting the wedges or by keeping the wedges fixed and adjusting the upper and/or lower screwdown means so as to force the bearing blocks against the wedges.
