Abstract

1407726 Shaping electrodes GRAFTON CORP 21 June 1973 [28 March 1973] 29560/73 Heading B3D Apparatus for shaping an electrode comprises a workpiece mounting member and die mounting member, one 22 of which is mounted above the other member 30 in vertical alignment therewith and is vertically movable towards and away from the other member which rests for free sliding movement in any horizontal direction in the horizontal bearing surface of bearing means 32, 34, 36, 38, and at least two synchronized eccentric drive means 70, 72 for imparting circular translatory movement to said other member 30 in the horizontal direction. As described, the die member 25 which has an abrasive cavity is secured to the die mounting member 22 which is in the form of a platen connected by a rod 20 to an hydraulic cylinder 18 for vertical movement along guide rods 14, ... 17 secured to upper and lower frame members 10, 12. The lower frame member has secured thereto bearing blocks 32, 34, 36, 38, the upper surfaces of which have brass bearing plates 40, 42, 44, 46 to provide the horizontal bearing surface for the other mounting member 30 to which the electrode workpiece 48 is secured. A pair of shafts 50, 52, which are joined by a chain 62 and connected by a chain 68 to a motor 64, extend through bearings 54, 56 in the lower frame member 12 and at their upper ends are formed with dovetail grooves 78 along which members 76 having shaft portions 70, 72 are adjustable, the shaft portions engaging bearings 82, 84 secured to the lower surface of the member 30. Rotation of the motor 64 causes the eccentrics 70, 72 to impart a circular translatory movement to the member 30 carrying the electrode as the die member 25 is lowered by the action of the cylinder 18. In another embodiment, the horizontal bearing surface is provided by a continuous bearing' surface.
