Abstract

1353466 Ingot mould lining apparatus FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 15467/70 Heading B3F An apparatus for applying slabs to the cavity walls of an ingot mould or a head-box for an ingot mould includes four pressure-applying plates (11) 12 arranged in the form of a rectangle of smaller cross-section than the cavity 50 to be lined and means for expanding the rectangle by moving each pair of plates in opposing directions to apply pressure to the cavity walls via liner slabs 51 held on the pressure plates (11) 12. The apparatus has a frame including a top 1 and base 2 members linked by columns 3, the top member 1 mounting a fluid motor 36 which lowers the bottom member 2 and columns 3 into the mouth of an ingot mould 50 before lining. As the apparatus is lowered forks 44 move into a horizontal position to centre the apparatus in the mould mouth 50. -Lining slabs are now placed along the two narrow rectangle sides on plates (11). Further actuation of the fluid motor 36 results in downward movement of a crosshead 18 which forces downward collars 19 on columns 20 and via linkages 21 (not shown) moves the plates (11) outwardly to press the slabs against the cavity walls and, if necessary, to mould the slabs to take up the camber or irregularities of the mould cavity surfaces. Lining slabs 51 are now placed along the two wide rectangle sides on plates 12. Further movement of the fluid motor 36 compresses springs 32 and moves a crosshead 25 downwardly. This results in outward movement of plates 12 to compress slabs 51 against the mould cavity. In a further embodi- ment (not shown) the plates (102) are moved inwardly and outwardly by individual fluid motors (105, 106). Spring buttons (104) mounted on the plates (102) are used to apply pressure to the slabs.
