Abstract
1337207 Rolling mills T SENDZIMIR 24 Nov 1971 54544/71 Heading B3M A cyclic rolling mill, which is suitable for rolling flat strips of metal or non-metal, includes an oscillating roll carrier which supports a work roll and two sets of backing castors for the roll, the roll carrier transmitting roll forces to one beam of the mill housing. A pair of similar carriers and work roll assemblies may be employed, but it is preferred to use one work roll and a co-operating platen. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), a work roll 14, together with backing rollers 16, 16a, and castors 18, is mounted in a carrier 22. The carrier bears at its upper side against a beam 26 of the mill housing, a roller 28 being positioned between the carrier and beam. A counterbalanced eccentric shaft is rotated to cause oscillation of the carrier, the resulting path of movement of the roll being as shown in Fig. 5. The shaft may be supported by a transverse housing beam if the width of the workpiece justifies it. To balance the reciprocating motion of the carrier, links 52 connect the carrier to levers 54 which are in turn connected to slides 58. The slides reciprocate on fixed piston-rods during oscillation of the carrier, and may have air cylinders associated with them. The movement of the carrier is then cushioned by air pressure, and may in fact be augmented during the working stroke of the roll. Beneath the workpiece is a platen 78 which is vertically adjustable, and which is cyclically moved in the rolling direction, during the working stroke of the roll, by an eccentric drive 88, 90. In an alternative form (Fig. 9), the carrier has a convex upper surface which rolls on a surface 30 of the housing 26. A lower platen 94 is vertically moved cyclically in synchronism with the carrier. Two work rolls 14, 14a (Fig. 11, not shown) may be mounted in the carrier, to increase the reduction of the workpiece. Alternatively, by making the curvature of the carrier coincident with the axis of the work roll (Fig. 10), the roll moves along a straight working path. The rolled thickness of the workpiece is simply adjusted by moving an anvil 94 horizontally, such that the platen is lowered during each return stroke of the roll, and the workpiece is moved out of contact with the roll. This movement is controlled by cams 102 and wedges 96, 98. The platen is also cyclically moved longitudinally of the workpiece by cam-operated pivoted levers 112.
