Abstract
1327698 Rolling mills T SENDZIMIR 22 Sept 1971 44147/71 Heading B3M A rolling mill includes at least one work roll which is reciprocated along a straight path at a slight angle to the mill pass line, the roll being frictionally driven by a reciprocating drive plate located between the roll and the housing of the mill. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, a pair of work rolls acts on each side of a workpiece slab 5, the rolls bearing against drive plates 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> and being supported in cages 5 and 51. During reciprocation of the drive plates, the work is fed through the mill by continuously rotating feed rollers 13. The drive plates bear against supports 14 which co-operate with the mill housing. A number of hydrostatic bearings 71 may be positioned between the plates and supports, the bearings being individually controllable so that a flat product can be obtained from the mill. Vertical edging rolls 6 are supported by the edges 5 and 5<SP>1</SP>. Driving of the plates 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> is effected by a motor 11 which, through gearing and crank drives (Fig. 3, not shown) causes vertical shafts 9 to oscillate. The shafts drive gear segments 7 and 7<SP>1</SP> which co-operate with teeth on the plates 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> to reciprocate them. By a similar arrangement of gear segments and rack teeth, the cages 5 and 5<SP>1</SP> are reciprocated at half the speed of the plates. For producing flat strip, the plates may be provided with profiles at their ends (Fig. 5, not shown) which ensure that the rolls 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> travel parallel to the pass line over the initial and final portion of each working stroke. The rolls can be made to move away from the workpiece during each backward stroke by means of reciprocating wedges 15 associated with the supports 14. The wedges also serve to adjust the roll gap of the mill. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, two groups of work rolls may be driven by plates 51 and 511 which reciprocate towards and away from each other. A further two groups may be located on the opposite side of the workpiece, or a supporting platen (as shown) may be employed. The necks of the rolls may be supported by spiral springs in order to decrease the inertia of the rolls as they are reciprocated. The plates 51 and 51<SP>1</SP> may have a slight recess corresponding to the mid point of travel of each roll, the recess relieving distortion of the roll which might occur due to uneven friction. In the latter embodiment, the rolls are so closely spaced that they are able to rotate through less than 180 degrees during each reciprocation. Thus only a certain portion of each roll surface contacts the workpiece, and this portion can be profiled while leaving the remainder of the surface cylindrical. The profiled portion can be shaped to roll the edges of a workpiece (Fig. 8, not shown) or can be grooved to produce several rods or wires from an initially flat workpiece (Fig. 12, not shown).
