Abstract
647,914. Drying apparatus. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 28056. Convention date, Feb. 5. [Class 34(ii)] [Also in Groups II and XII] During the process of separating a mixture of finely divided solids such as raw coal, chalcocite copper ore or grain seeds, into its components by passing a gaseous stream upwardly through a deep bed of the mixture confined in a separator (see Group II) the gaseous stream may be heated to an elevated temperature such that moisture is expelled from the mixture that moisture is expelled from the mixture of solids, or such that the coal is preheated for use in carbonization or partially devolatilized (see Group XII). As shown gas or air supplied from valve 8 and conduit 5 passes up through the bed contained in the separator 1 and is discharged from the top through conduit 10. A combustion reaction may be promoted in the bottom zone E of the bed, by introducing gas or other fuel supplied through valve 7 and conduit 6 and burning it in the gas stream supplied through valve 8 and/or 9 to fluidize the solids in the separator. In the separation of finely divided raw coal when small amounts of combustible matter pass out of the bed with the heavier ash, this combustible matter may be burned to supply the heat for the fluidizing gas.
