Abstract
647,043. Striking plates; emergency-exit fastenings. OVERTON, W. Sept. 30 1948 No. 25473. [Class 44] A striking plate 23 provided with a main catch 24 and a safety catch 27 is slotted to allow a plunger 14 and its horn 20 to pass therethrough. A sleeve 15 mounted in a vehicle bulkhead 10 forms the bearing for the plunger 14 and is slotted at one end 19 to allow the horn 20, secured as by rivets 21 to the plunger 14, to protrude into a recess 22 in the bulkhead. In an emergency a knob 17 secured to one end of plunger 14 is pressed inwardly, whereupon the other end retracts a latch bolt 13 on door 11 from the main catch 24, the horn 20 meanwhile passing through the striking plate 23 to reach the dotted line position 29 where its forward sloping face prevents the latch bolt 13 from engaging the safety catch 27. In a modification the striking plate is made in two parts which are spaced apart.
