Abstract

647,009. Indicative position of turbine parts. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Svenska Turbinfabriks Aktiebolaget Ljungstrom). Jan. 30, 1948, No. 2859. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XIX] The position of the rotor 3 relative to the stator 4 of a turbine is gauged by pneumatic means comprising built-in gauging devices 5 of the nozzle or feeler pin type, and an external manometer 9 connected to a distribution valve 7. In the example, conduits 6 terminate in nozzle tubes 5 mounted at spaced points in the fixed disc of a labyrinth packing. Measurement is effected between the nozzles 15, Fig. 3, of the tubes 5 and the inner machined surface of ring 12 comprising part of the labyrinth. In a modification, Fig. 4, a feeler pin 20 contacts the inner surface of the ring 12 and an obturator 21 having a frustro-conical surface regulates the escape of fluid pressure. In a further modification a lever 31 contacts the inner surface of the ring 12 by means of the anvil 30 and is biassed by a spring 33 to close the valve 35. When contact is made by the anvil 30 against the inner surface of the ring 12 the escape of the fluid past the valve 35 may be measured on the manometer 9 as before. In effecting measurements of clearance between rotary and stationary labyrinth discs in order to determine wear the rotary system is prized to a number of positions and a number of readings taken in each indicator. The average amount thus obtained represents the average clearance. By comparison with previous readings variations in clearance may be recorded.
