Abstract

1304674 Measuring gauges for ring seals GOETZEWERKE FRIEDRICH GOETZE AG 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970 29 Aug 1970] 26490/71 Heading G1M Apparatus for measuring the axial position of a sealing edge formed as a sealing lip of a ring seal comprises a mandrel 4 with an annular groove 7 adapted to receive the sealing lip 8, and a gauge 13 engageable with a transverse face of the seal when the halter is supported by the mandrel 4 with the sealing lip 8, in the groove 7, to determine the axial position of said face relative to the groove 7 and thereby relative to the sealing edge 12. The Mandrel 4 is rotatably mounted in a stand 1 which also supports the gauge 13 which has a feeler for engaging a face of a transverse flange 3 on the seal. The gauge 13 can be calibrated to indicate the axial distance 15 between the sealing edge 12 and the medial flame of an annular coil spring 16 which biases the sealing lip 8 into engagement with the mandrel 4 or with the shaft with which it co-operates when in use. A further gauge 14 engaging the periphery of the flange 3 enables any non-circulcrity of the flange or eccentricity relative to the sealing edge 12 to be detected as the mandrel 4 is rotated by a motor 6. An alternative embodiment comprises a vertical rotatable mandrel 22 Fig.2 (not shown) and a feeler gauge for measuring the distance between the lower face of the seal and the groove on the mandrel in which the sealing lip is engaged. Additionally a carriage mounted for axial movement relative to the mandrel carries a feeler for engagement with the annular core spring, and a gauge for measuring the relative axial positions of the carriage and the mandrel when the feeler engages the spring.
