Abstract

1380577 Testing sealing rings JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 18485/71 Heading G1S A resilient sealing ring 15 to be tested is mounted between flanges 13 of a spool 12 slidable in a cylinder 10 and is held in position against a spigot 17 and beneath a thin wall portion 11 by means of a spool abutting threaded stem 18. In this position an initial measurement is made by a probe 9 of the wall portion 11 to indicate any displacement of the portion 11 arising from the compressive force exerted by the seal. The spool 12 is then removed and the seal subjected to any desired environmental tests_while still on the spool, and a further radial measurement is made after re-inserting the seal to indicate any change in the compressive force as the result of the treatment on the seal. Alternatively the spool 12 may be moved to the right by stem 18 and subjected to fluid-pressure through duct 20, the spool being subsequently returned for further wall measurement as described. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the seal is seated in a thin walled portion of the spool and this wall portion itself is measured to give an indication of the force exerted by the seal.
