Abstract
873,930. Pneumatic gauging apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 37095/59. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A method of measuring a diameter of a ring 10 comprises effecting relative movement between the ring 10 and a tapered member 18 to reduce the annular gap between the ring and the member whilst passing fluid through the gap, and ascertaining the relative positions of the member 18 and the ring 10 when the rate of mass of fluid flow reaches a predetermined value. The ring 10 which may be a lip seal is mounted on a piston 20 movable along a cylinder 16. A tapered mandrel 18 passes through a pair of holes 38, 40 in the piston 20 and is fixed to the base 14 on which is mounted the cylinder 16. Air under pressure is supplied to the cylinder 16 through a conduit 84. In operation, air at constant pressure is admitted to the cylinder 16 and the piston 20 is moved downward by a handle 58 until the volume air flow has almost reached the predetermined value. Final adjustments are then effected by swinging a half-nut 76 into engagement with a screw-thread 62 and turning this latter by a thumb-screw 64. When the volume rate of flow of the air has decreased to the predetermined value, the position of the piston 20, indicated on a scale 80, is used to determine the size of the ring 10. If the ring 10 is mounted on the lower portion 36 of the mandrel, and the air pressure increased until the lip of the ring 10 pulls away from the mandrel, the pressure at which this happens is a measure of the elasticity and uniformity of the ring 10.
