[Class 83 (i)] Moulds.-A centrifugal casting-machine comprising a central pouring gate supplying a laterally arranged mould is driven by a single driving shaft through one or other of two clutches, one of which serves to rotate the gate and the mould about a vertical axis and the other of which serves, in addition, to rotate the mould about a horizontal axis, the engagement and disengagement of the clutches being under the control of an oil-operated piston. To the base portion of the machine frame 10 is bolted a standard 11 about which a unit comprising parts 45, 46, 48 and 49 rotates on bearings 15 and 16 when driven by a shaft 51 and gears 52, 50. The part 45 houses the refractory wall 39 of a ladle arranged on the axis of the standard and beneath a pouring funnel 35 bolted to an upper portion of the frame. Extending radially from the lower end of the ladle is a gate 42, around which, rotatably mounted in bearings 62 is a mould support comprising a body 70 with an integral gear 96 and a member 71 provided with arms 72, 73 which fit into bayonet slots 75 in the periphery of a mould 76. Gear 96 meshes with a gear 95 formed on an annular clutch member 91 rotatably mounted between the standard 11 and a surrounding part 49 of the first-mentioned rotating unit. Extending radially inwards from the member 91 are two vertically spaced sets of clutch plates, those of the upper set 97 alternating with plates 99 extending outwardly from the cap part 46 of the rotating structure and the lower set 98 with plates 100 extending outwardly from the standard 11. Operating within a bore of the standard is a piston 21 with a rod 30 carrying a cross arm which can act through an annular member 102 to engage either the clutch plates 97, 99 or the plates 98, 100 under the control of the piston which is operated by oil under pressure. Whether the oil is being supplied to above or below the piston, some of it passes through passages in the piston to a central bore in the rod and thence to the bearings and clutch. With plates 97, 99 in engagement, the mould support and the ladle and associated casing rotate as a unit about the axis of the standard, but with plates 98, 100 in engagement, the gear 95 is held fixed and as the gear 96 is moved around the axis of the standard, it rotates the mould support about the axis of the gate 42. The machine may carry two, three or four mould supports uniformly spaced. The mould comprises a casing 77 and base 79 and is prepared interiorly with patterns and sand in the known manner. When the mould is mounted by means of the bayonet joints, it is pushed into position against the action of springs 83 which act on a cover member surrounding the gate 42 which projects therethrough.
