Abstract

1374314 Filling with liquid phosphorous KNAPSACK AG 3 Aug 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 36299/72 Headings B8T and B8C The installation and nozzle described are for filling drums with liquid yellow phosphorous which must be kept above its melting point (45‹ C.) and under water. Nozzle.-The filling nozzle (Fig. 1) comprises an outer heating jacket 6, with a warm water inlet 4 and an outlet 5, enclosing the annular space 16 down which the phosphorous flows from tube 3, a nozzle supporting tube 8 which is fed with warm water from tube 15 and, enclosed by the tube 8 and communicating with it through holes 33, the control pipe 23 which is attached at its upper end by an eye 26 to a plate 54 which can be raised by a cylinder 56 against springs 53. The pipe 23 is screwed to the control piston 17 which has a spring-loaded outlet valve 21. At the bottom of the tube 8 is attached a control cylinder 11 which is welded via a conical piece 12 to the inner wall 1 of the jacket 6. A gland comprising a two-piece packing 18 with a central apertured spacer ring 20 provides the seal between the cylinder 11 and piston 17 and a similar gland 34, 35 is provided at the top of the tube 8. The whole filling nozzle is mounted on a carriage 39 which is raised and lowered by cylinders 40. Machine.-The drums are arranged two-deep in a semicircle and the nozzle is swung over them on a frame 36 (Fig. 5). The upper ends of the cylinders 40 are attached to a trolley 38 which is moved along the top of the frame 36 by a cylinder 37. Operation.-The cylinders 40 lower the nozzle into the drum, which previously has been filled for a preset time with warm water from a pipe 52 until a cross-shaped member 47, resiliently mounted on the drum cover 44 that the nozzle carries, contacts the drum whereupon pins 46 arranged on the member 47 actuate switches carried on the cover 44 stopping the descent. Warm water is discharged from the heating jacket 6 through the outlet 5 and regulating valve 49 and from tube 15 via holes 33 and valve 21 into the drum until the water reaches the required level when a water level indicating probe carried on the member 47 gives a signal causing the cylinder 56 to raise the control piston 17 allowing the phosphorous to flow out of the space 16. When the phosporous reaches the required level a phosphorous level indicating probe carried on the member 47 emits a signal causing the piston 17 to be lowered, stopping the flow of phosphorous, and the carriage 39 to be raised by cylinders 40 until it contacts a limit switch causing further actuation of the cylinder 37 and/or rotation of the frame 36 to position the nozzle for filling the next drum. The filling nozzle may also be used in the drumfilling installation described and claimed in copending Specification 1,374,313.
