Abstract

646,521. Induction furnaces. BIRLEC. Ltd. Feb. 28, 1948, No. 6252. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1944. [Class 39(iii)] In an induction furnace of the submerged resistor type for melting non- ferrous alloys having a heating unit comprising a channel 5 connected by two straight vertical channels 3 to a hearth thus forming a metal-filled loop acting as the secondary of a transformer, the channels of the secondary are formed in a refractory block 13 threaded by the primary 9 of the transformer and cooling jackets 11 are attached to the outside of the block symmetrically o n both sides of the primary for cooling the surface of the block adjacent the primary. The upper portions 18 of the cooling jackets are shaped to conform to the outer contours of the primary 9 wound on a closed iron core 10, and lower portions 19 of the jackets are enlarged towards the centre line of the heating unit. The water jackets 11 are of bronze and are on opposite sides of the block 13. The jackets are in sections and have removable covers 12. The jackets have extensions 11a forming with the jackets a metal case enclosing the block 13. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a furnace with more than one heating unit and more than two vertical secondary channels. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
