[Class 61(iii)] A hand tool for removing' staples from papers and the like has a pair of jaws which, upon gripping of the tool, are caused to engage under the bridge of a staple, and on further pressure on the tool, one jaw lifts the staple, the other remaining in engagement with the paper. A rocker arm 1 and housing 15 which carry, respectively the lifting jaw 2 and anvil jaw 3 are connected together by a link 12 which is pivoted at 13 to the rocker arm and at 14 to the housing. In the inoperative position, Fig. 2, the link rests against an abutment pin 32 secured to the housing 15. A pin 33 on the arm 8 of the member 1 is guided in an arcuate slot 34 in the housing. The jaw 3 is shaped to form a pair of prongs 24 between which the bevelled angle jaw 2 engages under the bridge 38 of a staple, a member 6 being provided on the latter jaw for retaining the staple during withdrawal. To engage the jaws under the staple, the member 1 is depressed and this depresses the upper part 30 of a spring secured to the link at 29. The link 12 remains stationary, the jaw 2 moves clockwise under the staple, the pin 35 on the rocker arm 1 abuts the link 12 and the pin 33 on the arm 8 of the rocker arm moves forwards in the slot 34 in the housing. On continued pressure, the lower part 31 of the spring yields, the member 1 and link 12 pivot together on the pin 14 and the lifting jaw 2 is raised, pulling up the bridge of the staple with it. The tool may be operated in the hand or placed on a table. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the jaws may be suitably shaped for pulling tacks and the like. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
