645,653. Sand-mulling apparatus. DEHN, S. G. (Pettibone Mulliken :Corporation). Oct 11, 1948, No. 26440. [Class 59] A mulling apparatus with a bowl-like receptacle in which the mulling wheels carried by the crosshead are driven in a circular course to effect mulling of the material by squeezing it against the receptacle includes a horizontally elongated plough carried by the crosshead and travelling over the bottom wall of the receptacle, the plough extending outwards from substantially, the longitudinal centre line of the receptacle to its side wall and being horizontally and spirally curved, in a direction opposite to the direction of drive of the crosshead, the curvature being such that its radius progressively and substantially uniformly increases from its inner end to its outer end to move material from the centre of the receptacle positively outwards to the side wall during the mulling operation. A crosshead 6 rotated by a motor 26 carries a pair of rubber-tyred mulling wheels 7 adapted to run on the bottom of a bowl 5, their axle 33 being carried by a downwardly spring-pressed lever 34 pivoted to the crosshead 6, a scraper 56 arranged to contact the sides of the bowl 5, and a curved plough 8 engaging the bottom of the bowl 5 and spirally shaped to push material outwards into the. path of the mulling wheels 7. A bracket 44 carrying the plough 8 its secured in the crosshead 6, for vertical adjustment and for tilting adjustment about a fulcrum member 55 formed on a downward extension of said crosshead, by set screws 51, 52. The crosshead 6 and its driving motor 26 are secured to an upper part 10 of the bowl 5 the lower part 12 of which is separable and is formed as a wheelbarrow which may be wheeled away for renewal of a charge of'material' when the upper part of the mill is lifted.
