A mortar-dispensing device comprises a mortar hopper 1 having an open base of width slightly less than the width of the brick or like wall along which the mortar is to be spread by moving the hopper 1 endwise along the wall, a mortar delivery opening in the rear lower corner of the hopper, a roller or similar member 4 rotating on a transverse horizontal axis in the corner as the device is moved along to disperse and form the mortar bed, and a device for varying the thickness of the latter. As shewn the hopper 1 is of rectangular box form open at the top 2 and bottom. The mortar is scooped into the hopper by laying it on its side and using handles 17, 18 and thereafter placing it vertically, as shewn, on the brickwork. On moving the hopper to the right the roller 4, which has outer flanges 5 and a central flange 5<SP>1</SP>, rotates about bushes 7 on metal brackets 8 fixed to the hopper sides. A scraper secured adjustably by wing nut 9 to the rear wall of the hopper, comprises horizontal portions below or slightly rearwardly of the roller body bottom and connecting portions 11 which are close to the flanges 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The thickness of the mortar bed may be adjusted by varying the height of the scraper. In a modification the roller 4 has two or more flanges between the end flanges 5 and the roller surface may curve towards and away from these flanges. In a further form, Fig. 10, a wheel 15 which is forwardly located, drives the roller through pulley wheels 12, 14 and belt 13. Such a drive may be provided on both sides of the hopper. In a further form Fig. 11, the hopper 1 is of " coal scuttle shape and is provided with a single handlebar 17<SP>1</SP>. In any of the embodiments the roller may be directly turned by a crank handle and a wheel having fins or blades may be rotatable within the hopper for agitating the mortar. A screeding cowl of tunnel-like form may be hinged to the hopper and held in operative position through a roller moving on a rail alongside the wall. The hopper may have fixed or detachable fences downwardly overlapping the sides of the previously-laid course to centralise the device. The roller 4 and its discs or flanges may be interchangeable with others of different sizes and may be flexibly or resiliently constructed or expansible and contractible in diameter.
