Abstract

640,356. Grinding-mills. SHARP, R. J. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35525. [Class 59] A mill particularly suitable for crushing and mixing together the ingredients of a chocolate confection, comprises in one form, Fig. 1, a water-cooled cylindrical container 10 enclosing frusto-conical rollers 16 which are driven by arms 14 and 15 fixed to a vertical shaft 13 rotated by an electric motor 20, the rollers being formed at each end with trunnions journalled in bearing blocks 69 or 70 located in guide slots in the arms and urged outwardly by spiral springs 72, 73. The container has a domeshaped lid 12 formed with a feed opening 25 closed by a removable plate 26 and with a tubular part 31 to which a suction pipe 33 is fitted to extract air or vapour from the container, the part 31 being provided with baffle plates 35 to prevent liquid from being sucked out. The arm 14 carries a scraper 41 engaging the underside of the lid, and further adjustable scrapers 42 and 47, see Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided to engage the side and bottom walls of the container. The shaft 13 carries a stirring paddle 61. The outlet 75 from the container is controlled by a vertically-movable door 76 operable through rack and pinion gearing by a lever 79. In a modification, Fig. 9, the spiral springs are supplemented by bow-shaped springs 98 and 99 secured to members 100 passing through slots in the driving arms, these members forming abutments for the spiral springs. The rollers may be formed with spiral grooves as in Fig. 1.
