llivtull I llll Patented Apr. 19, 1938 UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE mmlncllffffam This invention has reference generally to im.. provements in centrifugal power separators and more particularly relates to an improved continuously acting centrifugal separator.
It is the primary aim andobject of the present invention to provide a centrifugal separator or j filter with means for continuously charging, separating and discharging material while operating at full speed thereby avoiding loss of time lo etc. usually spent on startingA and stopping operations.
More particularly the invention embraces the provision of an improved separator briefly consisting of concentrically arranged receptacles for 15 respectfully receiving the liquid and solid matter while cooperating therewith and situated within the inner receptacle are the improved cooperating separating members preferably in the form of a perforated bowl and a cooperating spiral lifting member.
The invention also embraces the provision of improved means for mounting and rotating the vcooperating separating members at different 'speeds while in addition theparts are constructed so that they can be readily assembled and disassembled for cleaning or repairing purposes.
Other objects aswell as the nature, characteristie features andv scope of the invention will be more readily apparent from the following `description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims forming a-part of the speclcation.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the acoompanying drawing, inwhich the figure is a vertical transverse sectional view through the improved separator.-
Similar characters of reference are employed inA all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts. Y 40 Referring now, more particularly, .to the accompanying drawing there is provided a supporting stand I having Van upper horizontal supporting surface on which is disposed an outer receptacle- 2 while concentrically arranged with- 45 in the outer receptacle is an inner receptacle 3 having a two'part base l, 5 the latter being disposed on and supported by the horizontal supporting surface I of the main support. The parts l and are suitably spaced to provide a chamber i for a purpose hereinafter described while the part 5 is also provided with a depending central and apertured boss 'I which projects through an opening in the supporting surface I. A discharge pipe 1' is also arranged through the base 55 parts I, l and platform I in order that liquid material may be ,discharged from the inner receptacle 3. i
Cooperating Withmthe outer and` inner receptacles 2 and 3 are the improved separating meml bers generally designated 8 and 9 respectively 5 bothl of which are arranged within the inner receptacle 3. The memberv 8 is inthe form of a bowl and consists of a disc-like bottom III with a perforated or ltering annular wall I I the lower edge of which is suitably fixed as at I2 to the 10 outer edge of the bowl. The disc-like bottom I Il is `formed on its undersurface with a boss Il about a central opening I5 in the bottom and terminates in a depending sleeve-like journalling portion IG rotatably arranged in a bearing opening I'I in the upper part 4 of thebottom of the inner receptacle 3. Suitable packing means I8 and ball bearing means I9 are respectively arranged in a recess in the undersurface of the plate l for cooperating with the journalling portion I6. yArranged vertically through the opening i5, the bearing sleeve I 6, and the apertured boss 1 is a spindle20 being mounted in the apertured boss by suitable radially acting ball` bearings 2| and an adjustable thrust bearing 22. In this connection it -is to be noted that the aperture I5 and the journallingsleeve I6 are preferably fitted with a wear resisting sleeve 23.
Removably keyed to the upper projecting end of the spindle is the other separating mem- 30 ber V9 consisting in the present instance of a disc-like body 24 to which is fixed the lower end of a spiral blade 25, the outer edges of the convolutions of which are arranged in closely f spaced relation to the inner surface of the perfo- 35 rated separating or filtering wall II terminating approximately flush with the upper edge of this wall as clearly shown in the drawing. In this connection attention is directed to the provision of a guide ledge 2B.xed to the outer surface of 40 the perforated annular wall II, the ledge projecting over the upper edge of the inner receptacle 3f so as to ensure of the depositing of solid materials straight from the inner surface of the wall II over the ledge and outwardly into the outer receptacle 2. Incidentally the bottom of the receptacle 2 is inclined downwardly as indicated at 21 while situated at the lowermost point is a discharge outlet 28 for the solid matter. The upper surface of the disc-like plate of the member 9 is provided with a frustro-conical boss or spreader 29 which is arranged partly within the mouth of the charging hopper or inlet 30 for the material to be separated. Obviously the material can be continuously poured into the hopper or inlet 30 and continuously discharged and spread on the plate 24 and subsequently continuously separated.
Improved means have been provided for rotating both of the separating members 8 and 9 at slightly different speeds and in reducing this feature of the invention to'practice a gear wheel 3| is keyed exterlorly of the lower projecting end of the journalling sleeve -l6 on the bottom of the separating member 8 while a gear wheel 32 of slightly larger size than the gear wheel 3| is keyed to the spindle 20 of the separator member 9 at a point preferably immediately beneath the gear wheel 3| both of the gear wheels being located in the housing or chamber 6 provided between the parts 4 and 5 of the bottom of the inner receptacle 3. A power transmitting shaft 33 is vertically journalled in the boss l and has keyed on its inner end a gear wheel 3l which is slightly larger than the gear wheel 3i with which it is in mesh while another gear wheel 35 slightly smaller than the gear wheel 3l is keyed to the shaft 35 and with the gear wheel 32 on the spindle. It will be apparent that rotary motion imparted to the gear wheel 32 will result in a speedy rotation of the perforated bowl-like member 8 and a slightly slower rotation of the spiral blade-like member 9.
In operation, material is discharged continuously through the mouth of the hopper or inlet 30 where it is deflected by the conical boss 29 and due to centrifugal action is drawn against the wall il, the liquid matter passing through said wall into the receptacle l from whence it is discharged through the discharge or outlet pipe.
1'. 'I'he solid matter is elevated by the spiral blade along the inner wall and discharged over the ledge 26 into the receptacle 2 sliding down the inclined bottom 21 and being separately and independently discharged through the discharge or outlet 28, the arrows in the drawing indicating the course of the solid liquid materials.
It is believed in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having now fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A centrifugal separator of the character described, a rotary filtering bowl, a vertically arranged inlet tube depending into the bowl and having the discharge end thereof arranged concentrically with said rotary filtering bowl, a separating member rotatably arranged relative to the bowl and including a disc-like body, a conical spreader member on the body and projecting into the mouth of the tube, a free helical member ixed at its base to the body and having its outer edge arranged in close relation to the inner surface of the filtering bowl and acting to continuously remove solid matter from the bowl, and means for separately and independently receiving and discharging solid and liquid matter.
2. A centrifugal separator of the character described, comprising an outer receptacle having an inclined bottom terminating in a discharge outlet, an inner receptacle positioned concentrically with the outer receptacle and also arranged through the inclined bottom thereof, a vertically arranged inlet tube projecting into the inner receptacle, a pair of independently rotatable separating members arranged one within the other and within the inner receptacle, an inlet tube depending into the bowl and having the discharge end thereof arranged concentrically with said members, one of the members being in the form of a perforated bowl and the other member consisting of a disc-like body positioned near the bottom of the bowl, a truste-conical spreader carried centrally of the upper surface of the body and projecting into the mouth of the tube, and a vertically disposed helical blade havlng its lower end fixed to the body near the periphery thereof and having its outer edge arranged in close relation to the inner surface oi the bowl, means carried by the bowl for deflecting the material raised by the helical member into the outer receptacle, means for discharging liquid material from the inner receptacle, and means for independently rotating the separating members at different speeds.
3. A centrifugal separator as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bowl has a hollow rotary journalling portion which extends through the bottom of the inner receptacle and is journalled therein, While the other member also includes a rotary spindle which is 'arranged through the hollow journalling portion and to which the body is fixed, said spindle being journalled in the bottom of the inner receptacle while the means for rotating the said centrifugal members is connected with the spindle and journalling portion.
4. A centrifugal separator as claimed in claim 2, wherein the inner receptacle has a double bottom providing a chamber, the bowl including a journalling portion journalled in the upper part of the double bottom while the other member also includes a spindle arranged through the journalling portion and journalled in the lower part of the double bottom of the inner receptacle, the means for rotating the separating members at different speeds including a power shaft also journalled in the bottom of the double bottom of the inner receptacle, and intermeshing gear wheels carried by the power shaft and respectively by the journalling portion and spindle and housed within the chamber provided by the double bottom for transmitting rotary motion from the power shaft to the separating member` JULIO FILLINGER.
