Abstract
250,185. Brosius, E. E. April 3, 1925, [Convention date]. Charging and dicharging. - Apparatus for handling materials, applicable more particularly to charging and discharging furnaces, comprises load-handling means mounted on a truck 2 which travels freely over a supporting floor and has a pair of front wheels 3 and a single driving and steering rear wheel 10. The latter is driven through gearing 12 by an electric motor 11 and the steering is effected bv the hand-wheel 15 operating, through pinion gearing 13, 14, a stud shaft 7 projecting upwardly from a steering-frame. 8. To the front end of the truck is pivoted a bracket 18, Fig. 2, in which is mounted a peel 17 adapted to be rotated by an electric motor 20 supported on a rearward extension 19 on the bracket 18. The extension 19 is pivoted at 28 to the piston rod 21 of a fluid-pressure motor 22 pivotally mounted between arms 4 secured to the truck, and carrying an operators' seat 29. The outer end of the peel 17 is adapted for engagement with a charging-trough B which, after appropriate adjustment of the inclination of the peel 17 by operation of the motor 22, is inserted in the furnace 0 by the approach of the truck 2, and when in position, is inverted, to discharge the material, by operating the motor 20. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the trough B is omitted and the motor 20 replaced by a fluid-pressure cyinder 36 adapted to extend or retract a rod 37 which is arranged within the peel 17<1> and secured to the arms 46, Fig. 5, of ingot-gripping tongs 47. The truck 2<1> carries counterweights 6<1> at the rear end to prevent tipping, and at the front a spring buffer 48 adapted to engage a plate 49 projecting outwardly from the front of the furnace. Fig. 6 shows a further modification for handling ingots, the peel 17 being in this case replaced by a slide 53 pivoted to the truck 50 at 51 and having a rear extension 52 which is connected to the motor 54 and has upstanding lugs in which is pivotally mounted a fluid-pressure motor 56. The rod 57 of this motor carries a U-shaped frame 59 adapted to embrace an ingot I, as shown, and withdraw it on to the slide 53 from which it mav be transferred to any desired position. A controller, operated by a pedal adjacent the operator's seat 29<1>, is provided for controlling the current supplied from an external source through a cable to the driving motor 11<1>, and the pressure fluid for operating the motors 22', 36, Fig. 3, is supplied by a flexible connection, to a tank 30<1> carried on the truck 2<1> and having separate pipe connections to similar four-way valves provided for each motor. Fig. 3 shows only the valve 39 for the motor 36, the operation of which is reversed by actuating the handle 42 connected to the rotary valve member 70, Fig. 9, which is so shaped that, in either position, the exhaust from the motor 36 passes off through the connections 43 and is delivered to the hollow peel 17<1> for cooling purposes, passages 45, Fig. 5, being provided for escape of the fluid through the peelhead 44.
