Abstract

645,297. Vacuum apparatus for raising liquids. GRAYSON, Sir H. M., and HARROLD, G. March 25, 1948, No. 8787. [Class. 102(ii)] In apparatus for transferring liquid from one vessel to another, e.g., removing sludge from an oil bunker to a barge, an intermediate tank 1 is connected by pipe 2 to the nozzle for sucking up the liquid and by a pipe 4, situated above the maximum level to which the liquid may normally rise in the tank 1, to a vacuum pump 6. A separator vessel 5 interposed between the pipe 4 and pipe 7 to prevent oil being drawn into the vacuum pump and the vessel 5 has a depending standpipe which is liquid sealed at its lower end 9 and is of a length in excess of the barometric head or at least in excess of the suction head of the vacuum pump. The liquid in the tank 1 may be transferred by opening valve 3 and an atmospheric 'valve 11. Valves 12, 13 connected to sources of air and.steam.press,ure may be fitted to force the liquid from the tank 1. Two intermediate vessels 5 may be used in parallel.
