Abstract

759,910. Raising liquids. ZAVODY VITEZNEHO UNORA, NARODNI PODNIK, and MARKOVIC, S. July 3, 1953, No. 18495/53. Class 102(2). Apparatus for raising liquids or solids in suspension comprises two or more airtight vessels 2, 2a, 2b ..., Fig. 1, arranged one above another and over a tank A containing the material to be raised, a receiving tank B and a vacuum pump (not shown) connected to the vessels by pipes 5a, 5b, 5c and 5. A suction pipe 1 having air admitted at its lower end through a valve 9 connects the tank A to the vessel 2 whilst U-pipes 16, 16a ... having valves 9a, 9b ... admitting air to the bottom ends of their lower limbs connect each vessel to the one immediately above it. The length of the pipe 1 is made longer than the barometric column of the material to be raised but shorter than the barometric column of material-air mixture having regard to the vacuum prevailing in the vessel 2 whilst the longer limb of each U-pipe is made shorter than the barometric column of the material-air mixture less the column of deaerated material in the shorter limb so that the material to be raised is lifted to a height at each stage which is greater than the barometric height of the material. The upper ends of the longer limbs may be bevelled as shown at 14, Fig. 3, as also may the upper end of the pipe 1, to assist the de-aerating of the material as it emerges from the pipes, and the pipe 3 between the uppermost vessel and the receiving tank B may be bent upwardly and provided with a counterweighted flap valve 6. In a modification, the upper ends of the longer limbs of the U- pipes and the upper end of the suction pipe 1 may be provided with conical de-aerating weirs 14b, Fig. 2, and the shorter limb of the U-pipe may surround the pipe 1.
