[Class 83 (iii)] A machine for use in the manufacture of spectacle frames comprises a main slide 9 on which is adjustably mounted an auxiliary slide 11 having mounted thereon a vertical member which carries cutting means 29 and is provided at or adjacent its lower end with an annulus 27 acting as a guiding abutment during the manipulation of a templet carried by a workholding jig in contact with the annulus. The slide 9 may be vertically or horizontally adjustable on its carrier and the slide 11 may be laterally or vertically adjustable on the slide 9. Further, either one or both slides may be angularly adjustable. The slide 11 is vertically adjustable relatively to the slide 9 by means of a sprocket-wheel 123 having two chains 125, 127, lapped therearound, the sprocket-wheel being angularly displaced by means of a lever 129. The vertical member comprises a stationary outer sleeve 41 carrying the annulus 27 and provided with oil holes 113, an inner rotatable sleeve 35 having a driving pulley 25 keyed on the upper end thereof, and a rotary spindle 21 having a chuck 31 which is adjustably clamped within the lower end of the sleeve 35, the chuck carrying one or more cutters. Upper and lower ball-bearings are disposed between the sleeves 35 and 41, the outer race of the upper ball. bearings being spring-loaded to allow for high and low speeds of the sleeve 35. A rotatable spindle 5 is upwardly displaceable into engagement with the cutter or cutters so as to act as a locating, guiding and steadying device. The vertical member and the spindle 5 may be simultaneously or independently moved into and away from operative position. The spindle 5 may be used as a guiding abutment instead of the annulus 27.
