Abstract
644,183. A.C. commutation machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MAGGS, A. H. May 12, 1948, No. 13046. [Class 35] A.C. stator fed commutator motor with fixed brushes has its speed regulated by means of a tapped regulating winding accommodated in the stator slots and connected through the tapping to the brushes in order to inject voltages in the rotor winding according to the position of the tapping. The Figure shows a two-phase motor (stator winding not shown) having a secondary winding 1 with brushes 2, 3 connected to the regulating winding having sections 6, 7, 8 of the first phase and with brushes 4, 5 connected to the regulating winding having sections 9, 10, 11 of the second phase. When the three sections 6, 7, 8 have their turns in the ratio 1 : 3 : 2 the motor can have thirteen speeds and, if section 7 is omitted, the motor can operate on seven possible speeds. The speed varies from maximum to minimum according to whether the M.M.F's of the regulating winding and of the respective rotor winding are assisting to the maximum value in the same sense or in maximum opposition. The supply can be single phase, if a condenser is used, or polyphase. Specification 24581/08, [Class 35], is referred to.
