Abstract
643,899. Locking nuts &c. PARR, B. A. Dec. 10, 1947, No. 32585. [Class 89(i)] Nuts are locked by a spring member 20, Figs. 1 and 3, attached to the free surface of the nut, as by welding at 23, so that the member presses on the crests of the bolt threads, the friction surface being integrally lined with soft metal 22 such as copper which may be cadmium &c. plated. The fixed end trails during screwing up so that the member acts as a band brake against unscrewing. The spring may be housed in a counterbore in the nut; more than one spring may be used and the spring may be welded to the nut at its centre. The spring may be preformed to fit the threads and may be helical. In a further modification the spring is coned at 26, Fig. 9, to engage a countersink in the bearing face of the nut. In this form the nut runs freely on the bolt until the spring engages the bearing surface. The spring is retained by peening the nut at 16 into a groove in the spring and relative rotation is prevented by dimpling at 17 into the space between the ends of the spring. A spring may be secured in a groove in or to the reduced end of a bolt; in this case the soft metal is on the outside of the spring. As applied to a hollow bolt the spring is secured internally at 23a and the ends are doubled back at 29 to project through slots in the bolt. As applied to the nut of a pipe union, the spring is U- shaped and is attached at its centre and the legs of the U engage in slots in the nut.
