Abstract

594,031. Locking nuts. DZUS, W. June 22, 1945, No. 15993. [Class 89 (i)] A self-locking nut or similar threaded member has an extension in the form of a collar 14 which may be separate from the main part 12 of the nut and is slotted and tapered in thickness towards the outer end to permit deformation into arcuate longitudinal form with the point of minimum diameter at an intermediate position 17. The resilience may be increased by a helical spring 18. In the contracted position the edges of the segments adjacent the slots 16 do not bear against the threads so that the nuts may be used on coated bolts, such as those cadmium plated, without damaging the surface. In a modification, the minimum diameter may be adjacent the outer end. The invention may be applied to linkwork such as that shown in Fig. 7 where a threaded rod 23 screws into a sleeve 21 and a stud 24 into a boss on a link 19.
