Abstract

643,616. Stoppering. STALLER, J. May 11, 1948, No. 12920. Convention date, June 4, 1947. [Class 125(ii)] A bottle 3; having a permanent ring 4 and a rubber cushion 5 around its mouth, is supported neck downward during filling in a recess in the filling head 1. The flanged cap 14 to be sealed to the ring 4 is supported in a transverse stepped bore 13 having a groove 24 in a slidable cylindrical member 9 provided also with a second, smaller, transverse bore 12. The member 9 is first slid to the right sufficiently for the bore 12 to register with the bottle axis, the bore 13 being partly within a recess 23 of the head. A protective gas supply pipe 21 is now pushed up into the bottle, the gas compressing the residual air against the bottom of the bottle. The supply of liquid with which the bottle is to be filled is now turned on from the supply 7, 8 and the seal 14 which was surrounded by the gas by way of groove 24 recess 23 and bore 13 is now surrounded by the liquid. The pipe 21 is now withdrawn and the member 9 moved further to the right so that the seal 14 now registers with the bottle mouth. All the parts 15, 20, 21 are now raised simultaneously to push the seal into the ring 4 whereafter the parts 20, 21 are raised a little farther relatively to the part 15 so that the upper end of the member 20 forces the jaws 18 of the member 15 apart as shown in Fig. 3 thereby deforming the seal to effect the closure.
