Abstract
643,572. Machinery guards. DEER, P. W., and MYALL, P. E. Oct. 5, 1945, No. 26016. [Class 80(iv)] [Also in Group XXIX] A guard for a fluid-pressure operated machine, such as a hydraulic press, in which a return stroke is effected by a drawback hydraulic ram, is interconnected with an exhaust valve in the circuit of the return ram so that the valve is opened to permit a working stroke of the machine only when the guard is closed. The control valves of the main hydraulic ram may also be actuated by the guard. As shown, the movable platen 2 is actuated by a main hydraulic ram 3 on its downward working stroke and returned by draw-back rams 6. A valve 8 controls the supply of low pressure hydraulic fluid to the draw-back rams and supply and exhaust valves are arranged in a valve block 13 to control the main ram 3. A further valve 16 controls the supply of a high pressure fluid to the main ram for the completion of the working stroke. The guard 35 is interconnected with these valves by levers 20, 24 so that when the guard is raised the stems 22 and 26 of the main ram valves are actuated to close the hydraulic supply and open to exhaust and the stem 18 of valve 8 is actuated to close the exhaust from the draw-back rams to prevent downward movement of the platen 2. When the guard is lowered to a safe position the valve 8 is opened to exhaust and the main valves are actuated to supply low pressure hydraulic fluid to the main ram to effect a working stroke of the platen 2. Towards the end of the stroke a chain 30 connected to the platen 2 operates a lever 28 to open the high pressure valve 16 to supply high pressure fluid for the completion of the working operation.
