Abstract

635,423. Machinery guards. BROUGHTON, G. J. April 7, 1948, No. 9758. [Class 80 (iv)] A pneumatic or hydraulic press, or like machine, has a guard comprising two mechanically connected cage doors operated by fluid pressure. The guard and press share a common fluid circuit incorporating valves controlled by interlocks, there being one control handle 3. A slide 18 for the ram 19 of the press is driven, through toggle levers 67, 68 by a piston 21 in a cylinder 20, a projection 63 on an arm 60 opening a valve 5 when the slide is withdrawn The guard 12 is carried by a rod 14 which is operated by a piston 10 in a cylinder 11, a cam 55 opening a valve 4 when the guard is closed. Fluid is supplied along a pipeline 27 to a main control valve 22 and a relay valve 23. In Fig. 4 the pistons 10, 21 are positioned such that the guard is closed and the ram 19 applied to the work, but the valves 22 and 23 have operated to apply fluid pressure to withdraw the slide and, upon the opening of the valve 5, open the guard. Adjustable restrictor valves 51 are provided to control the speed of movement of the guard. The cylinder 20 and the valve 5 are carried on an arm pivoted at 56 so that vertical adjustment of the slide by means of a collar 69 does not affect the operation of the valve.
