Abstract
643,477. Feeding laps in textile combing &c. machines. HINSON, O. C. July 28, 1947, No. 20315. Convention date, May 17, 1945. [Classes 120 (i) and 120(ii)] In a textile machine, such as a Heilmann comber, wherein fibres are fed in lap form from a lap roll mounted on spaced rotatable supports, means are provided for automatically replacing an almostexhausted lap roll when the latter descends between the supports, by reason of its reduction in diameter. The lap from the almostexhausted roll may be severed and the fresh lap superimposed on the end of the severed lap. A fresh roll 23 may be held vertically above a working roll 15 by rollers on shafts 25, each fixed in the upper ends of a pair of arms 27 swinging on pivots 29, each front arm 27 having a rearwardly extending integral toe 33, which overlaps a corresponding integral toe 35 on its associated rear arm 27. To maintain the fresh roll 23 in its reserve position until needed, a detent latch 39 is slidably mounted in a position normally preventing the forward swinging movement of front shaft 25. When latch 39 is retracted, the front shaft 25 swings forward and the toe 33 releases its pressure on toe 35, permitting rear shaft 25 to swing backwards, thus releasing the fresh roll 23 to fall, under the control of side pressing members, such as 67. The latch 39 is connected by a link 47 to the end of an arm 49 fixed on a rockshaft 51. A pair of cradles 55 is fixed upon the rockshaft 51 to catch and hold the spent lap roll 15 when, by reason of its reduced diameter, it falls between support rollers 13. A cross-member 57 supported by the cradles 55 acts as a trip, when the spent lap roll 15 sags between rollers 13 to make contact with it, thus tilting cradles 55 and operating latch 39. The cross-member 57 is provided with a row of comb teeth 59 which pierce the lap from the spent roll 15 as it rests on the cradles 55 and, by reason of the continued feeding of the lap over the front supporting roller 13, causes the lap to be severed. The lap from the fresh roll 23 is superposed on the end of the lap of the spent roll 15 and together they pass over front supporting roller 13, beneath an apron 95, Fig. 3, and between the apron and a metal guide duct 101 to a feed roller 9.
