Abstract

642,973. Drying-apparatus. JOHNSON, D. B., SMITH, J. H. W., and JONES, H. L. Dec. 31, 1947, Nos. 35251/47 and 33516/48. [Class 34(i)] [Also in Group XVI] Webs printed with highly volatile inks are dried between impressions on different sides of the web by passage over a doublewalled drum, between the outer wall 1 and inner concentric wall 2 of which is passed a heated liquid which has a high boiling point, a substantially constant viscosity throughout the range of operative temperatures, is not liable to take fire, and is not corrosive, such as tetra-cresyl-silicate, or certain mineral oils. The drum is fitted internally with insulating material A, Fig. 3, and is fitted externally for more than half its periphery with a shroud 27 formed with double metal walls 28 with an insulating air space between them. Through the space 29 between the shroud and the wall 1 is passed a current of heated air by means of a pump 32, a heater 33, and a pipe 31. The air may be lead by a valve 63 to waste or to a pipe 35 leading to the inlet of pump 32. The hot liquid is fed by a pipe 26 through an axial bore 7 in the shaft 6 of the drum which is connected by pipes 14, 18, 19, Fig. 2, to the space between the walls 1, 2. The joints between the parts 26, 7 and 114 are fitted with packing. The hot liquid is circulated by a pump 45 through tubes 41 heated by three immersion heaters controlled by a switch 58 and a relay 59 actuated by a thermostat 60. The liquid is supplied from a tank 54 fitted with a non-return valve 55 to permit of escape of air if the liquid rises, and a return valve 57 to admit air through a silica gel drier 56 when the system cools down. The liquid supply system is fitted with a pressure gauge 61, and a thermometer 62, and a valve 51 controls the supply of liquid to the pipe 26 and to a pipe 50 connected to the pump 45, the inlet of which is connected by pipes 46, 53 to the tank, and also via an air trap 52 to the exit pipe 26 of the circulating system.
