Abstract
642,957. Variable-pitch propellers for braking aircraft. ROTOL, Ltd., MORRIS, E. H., DANVERS, E., and GODDEN, T. E. Sept. 2, 1947, No. 24241. [Classes 4 and 114] The reversing of a propeller for braking is carried out only after the landing wheels have touched the ground. The pitch is varied by the piston 7 which is normally limited to the positive pitch range by stop 28. When making a landing the throttle lever 10 is pulled back from position 15 to slow running position 14, altering the setting of the governor. The lever when moved through the gate 16 closes switch 19, 20, and when the landing wheels touch ground switch 38 is closed, making the circuit operative. Solenoids 27, 25 and 26 then operate the corresponding valves to reverse the connections between the pump and cylinder 6, to render the governor ineffective temporarily, and to increase the output pressure of the pump respectively. This removes in succession stops 28 and 29 and subsequently restores governor control in the reversed pitch range, each of these steps being controlled automatically by plate 33 connected to the propeller blades closing contacts 34, 35, 36 and 37 at various pitch angles.
