Abstract

642,565. Automatic guns. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. May 21, 1948, No. 13861. Convention date, May 22, 1947. Addition to 629,816. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to the cartridge feed device of the parent Specification in which the bullet and base ends of the cartridges are supported in guided chain elements 5, Fig. 2, driven by a sprocket 10 the chains being laterally guided away from the cartridge ends for disintegration of the links and the cartridges alone being further fed by a second sprocket 17 into the gun feed passage 16. In the present invention, each of the sprockets 10, 17 is driven by a torsion spring 29, Fig. 6, the casing 28 of which is turned for winding the spring by a motor 36 driving a shaft 26 through a reduction gear 35, 34, 33, 32. When the spring is fully wound and held by ratchet 43 engaging casing 28, the motor casing turns on its axis against the action of a spring 37 and thereby actuates a switch to open the circuit and stop the motor the ratchet device 42 engaging shaft 26 serving to hold the casing in this position. When a cartridge is fed to the gun, the spring tension relaxes and the motor casing returns to close the circuit and start the motor. The cartridge chains support the cartridges on shelves 3a in the container 3 which replaces the spirally wound chains of the parent invention. The chain links Fig. 8 are designed to support either end of the cartridge the base in parts 15 and the tips in recesses 14, the part 20 of one link hinging in recess 21 of the adjacent link.
