Abstract
In casting brass or other copper-zinc alloy in a die, this is coated with a metal oxide reducible to a lower oxide by the molten alloy to prevent adherence of zinc oxide to the die face. Examples of such oxides are manganese dioxide or sesquioxide, trimanganese tetroxide, ferric oxide and triferritetroxide, which may be used singly or mixed with inert diluents. The coating may be applied in water by spraying or dipping. The suspension may also contain dispersing agents, e.g. sulphite cellulose pitch, sulphated long-chain fatty alcohols or alkyl-naphthalene-sulphonates and a lubricant, e.g. graphite. A suitable dressing comprises one part of manganese dioxide to 10 parts of water to which 0.25 to 0.3 parts of a 10 per cent alcoholic solution of tannic acid has been added. After casting, the die may be cooled by dipping in water, to under 250 DEG C., any adhering zinc oxide or metallic particles being removed by brushing and a fresh coating may be sprayed on. Brasses containing up to 3 per cent of lead may be thus cast.
