Abstract

641,021. Preventing corrosion. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. Dec. 24, 1947, No. 34223. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1946. [Class 123(i)] An anode for use in cathodic systems for protecting underground metallic structures comprises an electrode of aluminous metal the surface of which is in contact with a mixture containing a mercury compound, e.g. mercurous chloride, which yields metallic mercury when in contact with aluminium. The mercurous chloride in an amount at least 0.001 per cent by dry weight of the mixture, and preferably of 0.05 per cent to 1.0 per cent, may be mixed with an inert material or with any chemical, e.g. inorganic halide, to promote the action of the cell. If desired, in addition, a coating containing the mercury compound may be applied directly to the electrode. Specification 641,022 is referred to.
