Abstract

Hydroxy fatty acid estolide ester-ethers are manufactured by heating the estolides of hydroxy fatty acids containing a chain of at least seven carbon atoms in the molecule with ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol and/or polyethylene glycol or ethylene halogen hydrins in the presence of alkaline catalysts such as sodium, potassium or calcium or their hydroxides or acidic catalysts such as boron trifluoride and aluminium chloride. Normal or elevated pressure may be used. The proportion of ethylene oxide employed should be just sufficient to give a product completely soluble in boiling water. The hydroxy fatty acid estolides may be obtained by heating hydroxy fatty acids under reduced pressure, optionally in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. In examples: (1) to (4) ricinoleic acid is converted to the estolide by heating with sodium hydroxide under reduced pressure. Ethylene glycol is then stirred in for 3 hours whilst heat and pressure are applied. The products are used as anti-foaming agents in glue solutions, paper making and in boiler feed water. In example (5) the product of example (1) is mixed with anhydrous sodium carbonate as a boiler feed water additive. Specifications 11741/13, [Class 2 (iii)], and 602,726 are referred to.ALSO:Ester-ethers of the estolides of hydroxy fatty acids containing a chain of at least seven carbon atoms in the molecule with ethylene glycol and/or polyethylene glycol are employed as antifoaming agents in glue solution, paper making and in boiler feedwater. They may be added to the latter alone or with other boiler feedwater additives such as carbonates or phosphates. Ricinoleic estolide ester-ethers prepared in examples (1)-(4) are stated to be antifoaming agents in glue solutions and paper making, and in example (5) the product from example (1) is mixed with anhydrous sodium carbonate to form a boiler feedwater additive. Specification 11741/13, [Class 2 (iii)], and 602,726 are referred to.
