Abstract

1462228 Branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acids HENKEL & CIE GmbH 19 April 1974 [21 April 1973] 17183/74 Heading C2C α-Branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acids of formula in which R represents a saturated, straight-chain hydrocarbon group (4-24 C), e.g. α-hexyl decanoic, α-octyl dodecanoic, α-heptyl undecanoic, α-nonyl tridecanoic and α-butyl octanoic acids are prepared by dimerizing a straight - chain saturated primary alcohol R.CH 2 CH 2 OH to converting to an alkali metal salt of the corresponding acid, and acidifying to the acid. n-Octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl and n-pentadecyl alcohols may be dimerized and the oxidizing alkali treatment may be by molten alkali metal hydroxide at 250-450‹ C., a mixture of potassium and sodium hydroxide being preferred. Examples describe the preparation of the above mentioned acids which may be used as wool lubricants or in fibre preparation.
