Abstract

640,015. Band-width compression. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. and BELL, D. A. June 5, 1947, No. 14934. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (b)] In an arrangement for compressing or expanding the frequency range of a signal the wave form of the signal moving along the delay line 3 at one speed is scanned by a succession of pulses moving along a second delay line 4 at a different speed. As shown in Fig. 1 each delay line is divided into sections of equal time delay, different for the two lines, the output from the sections of the line 3 being fed to the output circuit 8 via a succession of gates 7 which are opened in turn as the pulse in travelling along the line 4 reaches the end of each section thereof. To avoid undesirable change-over effects at the ends of the delay lines, attenuations may be inserted between the gates 7 and the output circuit 8, the loss introduced being greatest at the ends of the line. In a modification, Fig. 3, the delay lines are continuously loaded and in contact along the whole of their lengths with a block 26 of material having a non-linear voltage/current characteristic, the output being collected from spaced conductors 27, 28 therein. The cross-section of the block is reduced at its ends in order to produce the required attenuation of the output at these points.
