Abstract

638,959. Pipe couplings. BEESTON, J. P. April 28, 1948, No. 11595. [Class 99(i)] A hollow spigot 11 is insertable into and removable from the passage 18 of a cylindrical plug 13 rotatably mounted in the body 12, only when the former is in a position whereby it closes the passage 17 of the latter and rotary movement of the spigot relative to the body brings the passages into or out of line. The body may be formed with an arcuate slot 21 having an enlargement 22 through which the spigot is inserted into the plug, and the former may have a rib 35 passing between the plug and body to prevent outward movement of the spigot. There may be provided locking means, such as a spring- urged sleeve 36 engaging the body and slidable on the spigot to retain the latter in the coupled position, a packing ring 24 accommodated in an opening of a liner 14 located between the body and plug, and spring means to urge the former against the ring. In a modification the liner has an arcuate 'slot through which the spigot passes, the former being covered by a sliding door, and a hinged door is provided to cover the opening in the sliding door and to retain the spigot in position. The coupling may be adapted to have two plugs, e.g. by using two bodies and a member having a spigot at each of its ends.
