Abstract
638,919. Apparatus for applying handles to hand tools, cutlery &c. KRAUSZ, A., and BODEN, C. H. June 11, 1947, No. 15401. [Class 61 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] An apparatus for fitting hollow or bored handles to tanged articles of cutlery or hand tools wherein the tang is embedded in a cement filling, comprises a blade receiving die 22 slidably mounted on a frame for vertical movement towards and away from a handle receiving die 16 provided with means for vertical alignment with the blade receiving die. The tool handle is held by a spring-pressed, pivoted jaw 19 in the die 16 which is fitted to a slide 15 adjustable longitudinally of the base 10 of the frame on the transversely movable slide 14. The blade 26 is held tang downwards in the die 22 by a T-shaped jaw 30 which slides in two frontal lugs 28, 29. The die 22, carried on a mounting 21 slidable on the pillars 12, is suspended by a rod 23 connected to an operating lever 24, an abutment 25 on the die 16 limiting downward movement. The rod 23 extends below the mounting and is weighted to pull the lever 24 downwards. In a modification the die 16 is incorporated in or associated with a self-centering chuck and the die 22 with a magnetic chuck. The apparatus may be used on a bench or a rotatable battery of upper and lower dies may be constructed as a machine.
