418,503. Drilling and assembling cutlery handles. JAMES, E. H., and JAMES, J. W., 105, Trafalgar Street, Sheffield. June 18, 1934, No. 17942. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv).] A device for holding a cutlery handle while it is advanced to a drilling tool or a tang comprises adjustable jaws supported in a slide which is adapted on rearward movement to open the jaws, the latter being operated by a single actuated jaw-aligning member carried by the slide and means being provided for adjusting handles with different tapers into correct alignment with the tool or tang. The jaws 8 for holding a handle are tongue and grooved to a block 171 forming part of a slide 3 which can be moved longitudinally by a handlever 5. The jaws are connected for simultaneous movement by the head 12 of a bolt 11 connected to a yoke 14; buffer bars 15 are arranged in bosses 17 in the slide so that on backward movement of the latter the jaws are opened against compression springs 18 by the buffers, while on forward movement the springs serve to close the jaws on the handle. For positioning handles of different tapers a support 20 is provided between the jaws, this may be given various tilts by eccentrics 20<a> and 22 which are adjusted by levers 23a, 23 moving over graduated scales. The headstock for the drilling spindle may be replaced by a vice for holding knife-blades or the like when the tangs are to be forced into the drilled handles.
