Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A horizontally-movable gripper intended for transferring a heated radio-active specimen 22 to a clamp (Fig. 4, not shown) where a test may be performed on the specimen after the gripper has been withdrawn, comprises a horizontal frame 1 (shown vertical in the drawing) to which are pivoted by spindles 6, 7 a lower jaw 4 and upper jaw 5. Spring-biased plungers 12, 13 on the jaws abut the frame 1 and tend to hold the jaws closed, the jaws being opened by the movement of the head 8 of a pneumatic piston 9 controlled by a cylinder 3. The head 8 co-operates with cam surfaces 10, 11 on the jaws 4, 5, these surfaces being shaped such that the jaw 5 opens before jaw 4, as shown in Fig. 1. The jaw 5 carries a specimen centring blade 16, this blade being slidable on the jaw by a shank 17 and biased to the extended position shown by a spring 19. After the jaw 5 has closed on a specimen the head 8 engages a screw 20 on the shank 17 to move this screw along a slot 21, whereby the blade 16 enters a central groove 23 in the specimen 22 (Fig. 3, not shown).
