Abstract
637,305. Air cleaners. HOUDAILLEHERSHEY CORPORATION. March 17, 1947, No. 7334. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1946. [Class 8(ii)] An air cleaner comprises a casing 10 having a liquid sump in part defined by a substantially vertical wall 18 over which air passes in transit through the cleaner, a filter element 7 within the casing above the sump, a deflector in the sump comprising an upright body wall 28 higher than the sump wall 18 and spaced therefrom, and a trough-like formation 29 on the outside of the wall 28 and including an upstanding wall 30 spaced from the wall 18 to leave a gap 32 through which liquid is aspirated. The deflector divides the sump into two coaxial compartments, and the liquid, e.g. oil flows from one to the other through orifices 33 of total area of about one-third the area of the gap 32. On substantially increasing the rate of air flow, the deflector prevents undue aspiration of oil from the sump to the filter element which may be of metallic wire or ribbon, animal hair or vegetable fibre.
