Class 48 [Also in Groups I and XXVIII] A filtering device for removing sediment from an underwater surface, e.g. the bottom of an aquarium, comprises a water pipe which passes into and terminates within a perforated cylindrical filter casing containing a filter medium, and means for introducing a current of air into the pipe to induce water and sediment to flow up into the filter casing and to induce the water to flow out of the casing again via the filter medium. The casing consists of an open-ended cylinder 10, Fig. 1, having slots 16 at each end and cap members 11, 12 each having a short tubular portion 13 fitting into and spaced from the cylinder and similarly provided with slots 17. A filter medium 14, Fig. 4, such as cotton wool, is interposed between the cap members and the cylinder. A water pipe 20 passes through the lower cap member and terminates just short of the upper cap member and has secured to it an air tube 19 the lower end of which is let into an extension of the water tube having an elliptical mouth portion 22, and the upper end of which terminates above the water level. In use the device is moved about over the bottom of the aquarium and air is introduced at the top of the air tube 19 by the mouth or by a bulb attachment, so that air, water and sediment rise into the casing 10, the air escapes through a hole (not shown) in the cap 11, water escapes. through both ends, and sediment remains in the casing.
