Abstract
810,968. Air lift-pumps. HOREMAN, T. J. Sept. 12, 1957 [Oct. 12, 1956], No. 29976/56. Class 102(2). [Also in Group I] Apparatus for the purification of water in aquaria comprises a hollow perforated member comprising a framework of a plurality of perforated tubular limbs communicating with one another to form a closed circuit, a connecting tube communicating with the member for conveying water from the member to a position at least as high as the water level in the aquarium, and means connected to said tube for causing water to flow from the aquarium through the member and tube back to the aquarium. The member, which may be made of synthetic plastic such as polyvinyl chloride, is preferably buried in, and extends over the whole of, the gravel bed of the aquarium. In the example tubes 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 perforated by holes 18 about 1¢ inches apart are connected by elbow pieces 16 and T-junctions 17 to form the framework shown in Fig. 1. A vertical tube 20 is fitted over a hole in tube 14 by T-junction 21 and air is pumped into tube 20 through pipe 22, which has a diameter about one quarter of that of tube 20 and which is connected as shown in Fig. 2. The framework is buried in the gravel on the bottom of an aquarium with the vertical tube 20 projecting above the water level. The air introduced through pipe 22 rises in tube 20 drawing in water through the perforation which is lifted and aerated by the air bubbles and discharged onto the surface of the aquarium through tube 25.
