Abstract

A method of breaking water-in-oil emulsions comprises determining the water content of the emulsion and adding an amount of water-soluble surface-active agent to give a concentration of the agent in the water content of the emulsion which is about the critical concentration beyond which the surface tension of the solution is not appreciably reduced by increasing the concentration. Thus an emulsion of seawater in marine fuel oil can be broken by the addition of an amount of a sodium secondary alkyl sulphate to give a 0.1 per cent concentration in the water content and preferably heating to 100-150 DEG F. If heating is not resorted to, an unpumpable sludge can be rendered pumpable by agitation with the surface-active agent by air-blowing. The critical concentration may be reduced by the addition of polyvalent ions such as those of calcium or aluminium added, for example, as chloride.
