[Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII A fabricated girder or other structural member has a web e welded to a central portion d of the flange or flanges a, the central portion being flush with the inner face of the flange and having rolled or machined recesses b, c on either side of it, so that contraction on cooling is localized and distortion and internal stresses are minimized. The web may also be fitted in a groove in the central portion d or may be tapered or bevelled to abut on a corresponding taper or bevel on the portion d. T- or other section stiffeners may be welded to the flanges, the legs of the T-sections abutting against the web: Clamps i for locating the web may be fitted so that they re-act against the edge h of the recesses.
