Abstract

635,357. Two-part couplings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1896. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1942. [Class 38 (i)] A connector for cables 10, 13 comprises two plug units 14 and a double-ended socket member 21. Each plug unit comprises a base from which project a number of frusto-conical hollow insulating members 15 having conducting tips 16 connected to the cables. The socket member 21 has a corresponding number of frusto-conical apertures containing conductors 26 which engage the tips 16 when the plugs are placed in position with the members 15 fitting tightly in the socket apertures. Sleeves 31 on the plugs surround the socket member and the plugs may be held in position by surrounding sleeves bolted together. Fig. 2 shows one of the socket apertures with the cables 10, 13 and their tips 16 abutting against the socket conductor 26. The latter consists of two parts 26, 22 which are held together by a turned-out part 27 on the cylindrical part of the portion 26. Each cable is provided with a cup-shaped member 16 which is filled with solder 17. In a modification the metal tips 16 are omitted and the bared ends 11 of the cables terminate flush with the ends of the projections 15. The two-part members 26 are replaced by solid metal studs carrying points at each end which penetrate the strands of the cables when the plugs are inserted in the socket member.
