Abstract
633,770. Furnaces. FUEL FURNACES, Ltd., and PLATT, G. W. July 6, 1946, No. 20234. [Class 51 (ii)] A furnace for the heat treatment of materials, of the type wherein the treatment chamber and work charged thereinto are heated by the hot products of combustion generated by a plurality of burners and directed into the said chamber, the hot waste gaseous products being discharged from the chamber through damper-controlled flues extending upwardly through the furnace walls, is characterised in that the flues open from the bed or hearth of the treatment chamber and comprise portions which extend upwardly of and within each of two opposed side walls of the said chamber, the said flue portions being arranged side by side along the length of each of the said walls so that, when the furnace is in operation, a continuous hot blanket-like zone is created within and between the ends of each of the side walls and heat losses from the chamber through the said walls are minimised. As shown over so that the energization of the relay r, s in Figs. 1 and 4, main burners 7, 8, on opposite sides of the furnace fire into ducts 9 which open into the treatment chamber 1. Waste gases 'are withdrawn through channels 4, 6, in the bed of the chamber and through horizontal flues 12, 13, uptake flues 15, downtake flues 14 and outlet flues (not shown) to a common flue 17 which leads to a chimney : individually-adjustable dampers 18 are provided between the flues 14 and 15. Air for combustion is supplied from manifolds 23 from which passages 25 lead to the burners ; fuel is supplied from manifolds 22. The furnace may thus be regarded as comprising a number of units each consisting of two adjacent main burners 7, 8, with their firing ducts 9, two horizontal flues 12, 13, uptake flue 15, damper 18, downtake flue 14 and outlet flue. Specification 633,819 is referred to.
